Let's be honest: for most Kenyan creatives, tax season looks less like a calm filing process and more like a frantic Google search, a panicked call to a friend who might know what withholding tax means or when a clients accountant asks you at the last minute to send an invoice, and a quiet decision to deal with it later. Why We're Running This Survey

We are focusing on independent workers from designers, photographers, musicians, writers, filmmakers, content creators, and everyone in between. And one thing we hear constantly is that the tax system feels like it was built for someone else. Not for the person juggling three clients on M-Pesa, invoicing in dollars, and trying to figure out whether their equipment counts as a deductible expense.

Before we build tools, write guides, or offer advice, we want to actually listen. That's why we created the survey Behind the Art: How Kenyan Creatives Manage their Taxes.

This isn't a quiz. There are no right or wrong answers. We genuinely want to understand:

• How you currently handle (or don't handle) your taxes
• What confuses or frustrates you most about the process
• What kind of support would actually make a difference
• Whether you've ever worked with an accountant and how that went

What You Should Know Before You Click

We know trust is earned, so here's what we want to be upfront about:

It's anonymous. Your name, your business, your clients none of that is collected. We can't trace responses back to you.

It's confidential. The data is used internally to shape Kolekta's products and resources. It won't be shared, sold, or published in a way that identifies anyone.

It takes 5–7 minutes. Seriously. You can do it between client calls, on a matatu, or while waiting for a render to finish.

This Is a Community Effort

The creative economy in Kenya is growing fast but the infrastructure around it, including financial and tax support, hasn't always kept up. Every response to this survey helps us understand the real picture: not the textbook version of how creatives should manage their money, but the actual, messy, human reality of how it works on the ground.
