eTIMS Acting Up? A Few Things to Try Before You Write It Off

Password resets out of nowhere, pages that freeze mid-invoice. It's usually the system under load, not a flag on your account. Here's what's worth trying before you assume you're stuck fighting KRA, and the bigger shift hiding behind the outages.

If you've logged into eTIMS recently and been told to reset your password out of nowhere, or watched the page just stop responding mid-invoice, your account hasn't been singled out or blocked. It's also worth remembering there are people behind these systems doing their best, the same way you're doing your best to stay compliant. KRA is running tax infrastructure for a country of taxpayers, on systems getting pushed harder every year as enforcement tightens and more of the economy gets brought into the formal tax system. Some instability is what that growth costs. It doesn't make the 11pm password prompt less annoying, but most days, it's the system being under load for everyone, not a flag on you specifically.

2026 has had its share of rough patches. In July, eTIMS and TIMS went down for four days after what was meant to be a 20-hour maintenance window. In August, eCitizen and eTIMS had another stretch where taxpayers could generate invoices but couldn't download them. These made the news because they affected real businesses at real scale, not because anyone was slacking. Big systems serving millions of people have bad days. So before you assume you're stuck fighting KRA, here's what's worth trying first.

Switch browsers before you assume it's your account

A stuck login or a form that won't submit is often a pop-up blocker, a stale cookie, or a cached session clashing with the portal, and every browser handles those a little differently. If Chrome hangs, try Firefox or Edge (or the reverse). A private or incognito window works too, since it skips whatever's cached. This isn't about one browser being better. It's about ruling out the easy stuff fast instead of retrying the same thing for an hour.

Try off-peak hours

The advice to log in at night isn't superstition. Nationwide traffic on iTax and eTIMS is heaviest during the working day, especially near deadlines. Early morning or late evening tends to be smoother. If something isn't time-sensitive, it's worth queuing for a quieter window rather than fighting the midday crowd.

If you're forced into a password reset, just go through it

KRA has been prompting more resets this year as part of tightening account security, usually a sign the system is being careful, not a sign your account's compromised. Set a strong, unique password and store it properly so it doesn't become a second headache next time.

Check if it's a known outage before you burn an hour troubleshooting

KRA doesn't always announce downtime proactively, but when something's genuinely down, other businesses usually notice within minutes. KRA Care on X (@KRACare) is a reasonable place to check, and so is a quick search for what other people are reporting that day.

If it's still stuck, use the actual support line

eTIMS has a dedicated support desk: 0711 099 999, or timsupport@kra.go.ke. Have your PIN, a screenshot of the error, and the time it happened ready. It moves things along faster than a general complaint would.

Sometimes patience is genuinely the plan

If you've tried a different browser, a different hour, and the helpline, and it's still down, it's down. Log it, come back to it, and don't let an outage push you into panic-filing something incorrectly just to beat a deadline the outage itself is affecting.

The bigger thing worth sitting with

The system actually has gotten better in real ways: pre-populated returns, tighter eTIMS validation, more automation than five years ago. But "better" also means more rigid. There's less room now for the informal, figure-it-out-later approach a lot of freelancers and creatives grew up filing under. That's not a glitch to route around. It's a shift independent workers need to meet head-on, with better records and more confidence, not less. That's the conversation we actually want to be having. The browser hacks just buy you the time to have it.
